PRINCETON, NJ, August 18, 2009 -- The number 703 held no significance for David Russell of Cedar Run, New Jersey. That is, until June 1st when #703 proved to be his lucky ticket number drawn as winner of the 2009 Red Cross You Win…You Choose Car Raffle. The Red Cross Car Raffle offers the choice of S80 luxury sedan, stylish C70 convertible, or new 2010 XC60 crossover as the winning vehicle. Earlier this month, Mr. Russell made his choice and drove off the Volvo of Princeton lot a very happy man in a brand new Volvo S80 Sedan. “This is great!” said David Russell. He added, “My old car was just about to give up on me.” The generous donation of the winning vehicle by Volvo Cars of North America and the Long Motor Company allows nearly all of the $122,600 raised during this year’s raffle to go directly to local Red Cross programs and services. These services include disaster response, meals delivered to the elderly and homebound, providing a safe supply of blood to area hospitals, emergency preparedness education, lifesaving health and safety training. Another program to benefit is the School Safety Initiative, which brings the life saving skills of Red Cross First Aid and CPR to students of all ages at inner-city schools in Central New Jersey. “Volvo shares a strong commitment to safety and we’re grateful to have this partnership,” said American Red Cross of Central New Jersey CEO Kevin Sullivan. “Long Motor Company’s unremitting support during these tough times speaks loudly to their commitment to community.” The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey serves the people of Mercer, Middlesex, Hunterdon and parts of Somerset counties, helping our community prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, 2,201 volunteers and 25 full- or part-time employees assisted 271 families (954 individuals with shelter, food and/or clothing), after 117 disasters (mostly house fires) displaced them from their homes; trained 51,296 residents with First Aid, CPR or other lifesaving skills; delivered 45,267 nutritious meals to homebound and elderly; and provided care and support to 209 military families. Central New Jersey residents donated 13,466 pints of blood through the American Red Princeton Blood Donor Center or American Red Cross blood drives throughout our service area. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.
