PRINCETON, NJ, March 19, 2008 – Earlier today, Mayor John Bencivengo of Hamilton Township, Mayor Peter Cantu of Plainsboro, Mayor Phyllis Marchand of Princeton Township and Mayor Janice Mironov of East Windsor gathered at the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey to participate in national Mayors for Meals Day. These local mayors joined hundreds of mayors participating across the nation to raise awareness about senior hunger and show support for the senior nutrition programs that deliver meals daily to those homebound and unable to prepare meals for themselves. Mayor Bencivengo and Mayor Marchand then spent their lunch hours delivering meals to, and visiting with, Home Delivered Meals clients in Hamilton and Princeton Townships. “I am so happy that Mayor Bencivengo is here today,” said Agnes Hurlburt of Hamilton, three year client with Home Delivered Meals. “I hope that it will help people realize how important these meals are for older folks like me. This program saved my life.” Many Home Delivered Meals clients depend on the daily meals to maintain an independent, healthy life style and look forward to the visits from friendly, caring Red Cross volunteers. The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey’s Home Delivered Meals program delivered 45,576 meals throughout the Mercer County area last year with the help of more than 200 dedicated Red Cross volunteers. For additional information about Home Delivered Meals, to volunteer, or to make a donation to help support the program, contact Rose Berger of the Red Cross at 1-877-808-2800 or email: bergerr@njredcross.org. ###
