PRINCETON, NJ, February 27, 2009 – The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey will present its annual Bob Clancy Culture of Caring Award to long-time volunteer Robert E. Humes in recognition of his leadership, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment and support of the Red Cross mission.

A Red Cross volunteer for more than 25 years, Robert Humes has been a key crafter of the framework that helped build, and keeps, the Central New Jersey Red Cross chapter strong. A man who takes the term “active board member” to a completely new level, Mr. Humes continuously strives to find the best, most cost- effective ways to provide Red Cross services to neighbors during difficult straits. A dedicated board member who has served two terms as chair; Mr. Humes is also a loyal blood donor, a financial supporter, and has assisted with Red Cross relief efforts during large local disasters like severe flooding along the Delaware River.

“Bob Humes has always been an extremely important member of the Red Cross leadership,” said American Red Cross of Central New Jersey CEO Kevin Sullivan. “Personally, Bob has been a great mentor and friend and his guidance over the years has been invaluable.”

Red Cross Gala Honorary Chair James Harton and Gala Chair Karen Fagard announced the 2009 Gala Committee’s unanimous decision to select Robert Humes as this year’s Bob Clancy Culture of Caring Award recipient. Last year, 2,201 volunteers and 25 full- or part-time employees assisted 271 families (954 individuals with shelter, food and/or clothing), after 117 disasters (mostly house fires) displaced them from their homes; trained 51,296 residents with First Aid, CPR or other lifesaving skills; delivered 45,267 nutritious meals to homebound and elderly; and provided care and support to 209 military families. Central New Jersey residents donated 13,466 pints of blood through the American Red Princeton Blood Donor Center or American Red Cross blood drives throughout our service area.
