PRINCETON, NJ, February 3, 2009 – The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey and Rutgers Recreation will be holding Sweetheart CPR on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14th, from 1:00-6:00 p.m. at the College Avenue Gym, Rutgers University.

The Adult CPR/AED Course will teach individuals how to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults. It also familiarizes the participant with the use and safe operation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for victims of cardiac arrest.

According to Kathleen Pearson, health and safety director at the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey, “Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of adult death in the United States.” Pearson adds, “Many of these deaths can be prevented if someone quickly initiates CPR.”

Sweetheart CPR is open to the public and offers more than 100 individuals the opportunity to learn the life saving skill of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. You must be at least 16 years of age or older. Participants will receive certification from the American Red Cross on successful completion of this one-day course. Those who attend the course will also receive a free T-shirt. The cost for the course is $40.00 and registration is required.

“Community safety is a priority at Rutgers Recreation and mass training events provide an enjoyable method to enable more people to learn life saving skills,” said Tara Francis, training coordinator for Rutgers Recreation.
