| During the early morning hours on July 15, 2009, Robert Corkwell suffered cardiac arrest and his two children, both trained with American Red Cross life saving skills as lifeguards, immediately began CPR on their father. Very soon after, the Piscataway Police Department arrived with an automated external defibrillator (AED) and shocked Mr. Corkwell. When paramedics arrived, they continued the efforts and advised the officers they detected a heart rhythm.
On Friday, September 25th, Robert was able to return home after a long hospital stay and rehabilitation. His wife Anne Marie and 17 year-old son Matthew were there to greet him. Robert’s 22 year-old daughter Samantha was away at college, but returned later that evening to welcome her father home.
The Red Cross was also there to welcome Robert and to present Matthew and Samantha with American Red Cross Community Hero certificates. Immediate use of their CPR training undoubtedly had a positive effect on the situation. Add to that the quick response by first responders equipped with an AED, this family’s medical emergency ended on a happy note.
Certificates were presented to Sergeant Thomas Mosier, Patrolman William Lemire and Patrolman Michael Tighe of the Piscataway Police Department for their lifesaving actions on July 15th. Also recognized was Police Lieutenant Amy Myzie, who happens to be the volunteer American Red Cross Health and Safety Instructor that provided the lifesaving training to both Matthew and Samantha.
