On Saturday, September 18th, the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) team was invited to attend the 50th Chemical Company family picnic. As I arrived at the Somerset armory, it was clear that everyone was in for a day of fun. The field was rockin’ as the boy scouts served as DJs for the day, and the smells of Famous Dave’s BBQ filled the air.
The SAF team mingled with the service members and their families as we enjoyed the many festivities being offered. The rock climbing wall, horse rides and critter petting area were all a big hit. We supported the event as needed – serving cake, running bingo and calling out the winning raffle ticket numbers for the various giveaways.
At the end of the day, everyone gathered in the armory for the event wrap up. The unit graciously took the time to thank the Red Cross and other organizations that have supported them. Red Cross volunteer, Yeni Choi, received special recognition for painting the 50th Chemical Company emblem on the armory wall.
I felt privileged to share this special day with the 50th
Chemical Company. It was an honor to get to shake hands with so many soldiers and thank them for their service. It made me proud to hear firsthand how the support of the Red Cross SAF team truly makes a difference to the soldiers. |
